Crooked Vultures ready for NZ tour
John Paul Jones is on the line from Los Angeles - he divides his time between there and London these days - and it is hard speaking to the former Led Zeppelin bassist without referencing his old band.

Various Artists - Lowrider Jams $12.29 Audio Mixers: Matt Dike; Michael C. Ross ; Pretty Tony.Arrangers: Matt Dike; Michael C. Ross .Lowrider Jams is a surprisingly solid compilation of low-frequency dance music of the 1980s, from electro to freestyle to bass and beyond. Besides pop anthems like "Wild Thing" by Tone-Loc and "Me So Horny" by 2 Live Crew, the album includes electro classics like "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" by Hashim, "Don`t Stop the Rock" and "It`s Automatic" by Freestyle, "Electric Kingdom" by Twilight 22, "Egypt, Egypt" by the Egyptian Lover, "Clear" by Cybotron, and "When I Hear Music" by Debbie Deb. ~ Keith Farley Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Various Artists - Booty Jams $14.98 Includes liner notes by Kevin Goins.Booty Jams is an infectious, wildly fun collection of funky, sexy urban R&B and rap, mostly dating from the `80s and early `90s. All the songs here were at least fairly popular, and they share a humorous, hedonistic outlook that makes the disc a great party album. Highlights are difficult to pick, but some of the singles present include George Clinton`s "Atomic Dog," Clarence Carter`s "Strokin`," the Time`s "Jungle Love," Tone Loc`s "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina," 2 Live Crew`s "Me So Horny," Tag Team`s "Whoomp! There It Is," and the 69 Boyz` "Tootsie Roll," among others. ~ Steve Huey Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Jaguar Love - Hologram Jams * $18.45 Personnel: Johnny Whitney (vocals, synthesizer, drum machine); Cody Votolato (guitar, synthesizer, drum machine, percussion).Audio Mixer: John Goodmanson.Recording information: B.R. Studios, Seattle, WA (08/07/2009-09/14/2009).With Jaguar Love`s 2008 debut, the former Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves members seemed to be headed in a poppier direction, but no one could be prepared for what they had in store for Hologram Jams. For their 2010 outing, the group went the Har Mar Superstar route and made a full-on computerized pop album. Without key member, drummer/bassist/sometime keyboardist, J. Clark, the former power trio continued on as a guitar and laptop duo. It`s a huge turn, and because Hologram Jams is so synthesized, with the only organic ingredient being Cody Voltolato`s processed guitar, Johnny Whitney`s dazzlingly shrill singing style and flare for dramatics become even more evident. The music is seriously warped and totally danceable, filled with `80s-centric synths, booty beats, and lyrics about riding a mastodon to prom and battling an octopus. The indie rock/post-punk pretenses may be behind them, but the album is comprised of bristling energy. "I Started a Fire" and "Up All Night" are bombastic singles, while "Don`t Die Alone" and "Evaline" are sentimental power anthems for a digital age. ~ Jason Lymangrover Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
